Small Faces – Itchycoo Park

Small Facesin kappale on sanoituksiltaan hyvin ”Skippaa koulu and get stoned” -tyyppinen julistus, joka istui julkaisuhetkellään 1967 hyvin ajan henkeen.

”Over Bridges of Sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green

Under Dreaming Spires
To Itchycoo Park, that’s where I’ve been

What did you do there? – I got high
What did you feel there? – Well I cried
But why the tears there? – I’ll tell you why – yyyyy
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
I’ll tell you what I’ll do – What will you do?

I’d like to go there now with you
You can miss out school – Won’t that be cool
Why go to learn the words of fools?

What will we do there? – We’ll get high
What will we touch there? – We’ll touch the sky
But why the tears there? I’ll tell you why
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful

I feel inclined to blow my mind
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun
They all come out to groove about
Be nice and have fun in the sun
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful, It’s all too beautiful!

Neil Young – Tired Eyes

”Well he shot four men
in a cocaine deal
And he left them
lyin’ in an open field
Full of old cars
with bullet holes
in the mirrors.
He tried to do his best
but he could not.

Please take my advice,
please take my advice
Please take my advice.
Open up the tired eyes,
Open up the tired eyes.

Well, it wasn’t
supposed to go
down that way.
But they burned his brother,
you know,
And they left him lying
in the driveway.
They let him down with nothin’.
He tried to do his best
but he could not.

Please take my advice,
please take my advice
Please take my advice.
Open up the tired eyes,
Open up the tired eyes.

Well tell me more,
tell me more,
tell me more
I mean was he a heavy doper
or was he just a loser?
He was a friend of yours.
What do you mean,
he had bullet holes
in his mirrors?
He tried to do his best
but he could not.

Please take my advice,
please take my advice
Please take my advice.
Open up the tired eyes,
Open up the tired eyes.”

Tool – Rosetta Stoned

Biisi viitannee LSD:n käyttöön ja Keenan intoutuu kriittisehköön sävyyn laulamaan isommasta maailman ymmärtämisestä?!? Ei mitkään yksiselitteiset sanat.

”All righty then
Picture this if you will

10 to 2 am, X, yogi DMT, and a box of krispy kreme’s in my ”need to know” pose just outside of area 51, contemplating the whole chosen people thingy when just then a flaming stealth banana split the sky like one would hope but never really expect to see in a place like this. Cutting right angle donuts on a dime and stopping right at my birkinstocks, and me yelping ”holy fuckin’ shit!”

Then the X file being, looking like some kinda blue green Jackie chan, with Isabella Rossellini lips, and breath that reeked of vanilla chig champa, did a slow mo matrix decent outta the butt end of the banana vessel, and hovered above my bug eyes, my gaping jaw, and my sweaty L. Ron Hubbard upper lip and all I could think was, ”I hope uncle martin here doesn’t notice that I pissed my fuckin pants!!”

So light in his way, like an apparition, he’d had me crying out…
”Fuck me!
It’s gotta be
The dead head
Chemistry
The blotter got right on top o’ me
Got me seeing E mutha fuckin T!”

And after calming me down with some orange slices and some fetal spooning, E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose. He said. ”you are the chosen one. The one who will deliver the message. A message of hope for those who choose to hear it, and a warning for those who do not.” Me! The chosen one. They chose me!!!! And I didn’t even graduate from fuckin’ high school!!

(You’d better listen)

Then he looked right through me with somniferous almond eyes
Don’t even know what that means
Must remember to write it down
This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See, my heart is pounding cuz this shit never happens to me.

Can’t breathe right now.

It was so real
Like I woke up in Wonderland
All sorta terrifying
I don’t wanna be all alone
While I tell this story
And can anyone tell me why y’all sound like peanuts parents?
Will I ever be coming down?
This is so real
Finally it’s my lucky day
See, my heart is racing cuz this shit never happens to me

Can’t breathe right now.

You believe me don’t you?
Please believe what I’ve just said
See, the dead ain’t touring and this wasn’t all in my head
See they took me by the hand
And invited me right in
Then they showed me something
I don’t even know where to begin

Strapped down to my bed
Feet cold and eyes red
I’m out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead?
Can’t remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed

Overwhelmed as one would be placed in my position
Such a heavy burden now to be the one
Born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending
To write it down for all the world to see
But I forgot my pen
Shit the bed again
Typical

Strapped down to my bed
Feet cold and eyes red
I’m out of my head
Am I alive? Am I dead.
Sunkist and Sudafed
Gyroscopes and infrared
Won’t help. I’m brain dead
Can’t remember what they said
God damn, shit the bed

Can’t remember what they said to me
Can’t remember what they said to make me out to be a hero
Can’t remember what they said
Bob help me
Can’t remember what they said

We don’t know and we won’t know
God damn shit the bed”

Tool – Lost Keys (Blame Hofman)

Lost Keys toimii introna Rosetta Stoned -biisille. Lost Keysissä on kolme henkilöä: tohtori, häneltä kyselevä henkilö sekä LSD:n takia täysin pihalla oleva potilas. Biisin nimessä oleva Hofmann viittaa sveitsiläiseen LSD:tä tukineeseen kemistiin, Albert Hofmanniin.

”Excuse me? Doctor? Do you have a moment?

A moment? What’s the question?

More of a situation, a gentleman in exam 3

What’s the problem?

That is the problem, we’re not sure

You got the chart?

Right here

Not much here to say

No doctor, no obvious physical trauma. Vitals are stable

Name?

No sir

Did someone drop him off?
Maybe we could speak to them
Let’s get some background on this fella

No ID. Nothing
And he won’t speak to anybody

Well, let’s say hello
Good morning, I’m Dr. Wasson
How are you today? How are you today?
Look son, you’re in a safe place
We wanna help in whatever way we can
But you need to talk to us
We can’t help you otherwise
What’s happened? Tell me everything”

James Brown – Public Enemy No. 1, Pt. 1

Vuonna 1972 James Brown ensin julkaisi singlenä King Heroin -kappaleen ja muutaman kuukauden kuluttua jatkoi aiheesta tällä kaksiosaisessa Public Enemy -biisillä.

”You know, this is James Brown

I’m such a lover of people
because people did so much for me
I’m a lover of humanity, all of mankind
and I feel that He who has been successful
should look out for his fellow brother,
I feel that is my role, that is my job

I know when i was a kid,
see I was going to be a preacher, huh, ay
maybe I am, but I feel like I’m a teacher, somewhat,
because i’ve been able to experience things that most, the poor,
or a lot of other people have never been able to, even the rich.

So I’ll start by preaching right here,
because I want to preach to you one more time about heroin.

I talked once before, now I want to preach.
i want to start by saying
I heard heroin talking one more time and said

From where I came, nobody knows
I come from the land where the poppy seed grows
a whole nation gathered to plot my destruction
because I’m a breeder of crime and wholesale corruption
…you say, I’m pure and then undilluatable
and once I’m in your blood I make it pursuitable

now only they say sing it on son,
sing it on son, she says i’ve lost my son, he’s gone away
sing it on son, you might save a life

I said madam, lookie here,
I say, on the record and make all men
that date to use it will wallow in sin
driven then to commit a world of crime
…captive their will and destroy their mind
they changed their lives and destroyed the meek
misuser of fools and made the strong men weak.

I know!!
wait a minute,
lookie here,
they take gold from the rich and made them poor
take young foolish maden and made her a whore.
look at that!

and then I heard, about that time,
I heard a man in the corner,
he was sitting down with his head down low,
I noticed him when he first walk in

and he was addicted to drugs and he said I feel it,
and brother I want to getup and testify
so everybody started screamin and hollerin and crying
I saw a little tears coming from my eye, because I know I felt it
and this brother got up and said, let me have it!
I want to tell you everything! Talk to a man that knows!

he said, some will sell me and some will buy
for a state of affection and they cause high
but regardless of the position, and reason of use
you control my addition, and I give nothing but abuse

he said let me tell you about heroin,
and the full cause of torment
for its pleasures and pain
it will take all of your money and poison your brain

lord, I started singing, mmmmm
the place started rocking a little bit
I heard someone tapping their foot, and they said sing on brother
I started humming a little in the back ground
and then that brother said wait a minute

he said, beware of the sharp needle brother
it’ll make you sick
annoint angels and won’t let you kick
it’ll make you hustle, steal, borrow and beg
I’m still talking about that bad thing, king heroin
when you want to look for a vein in your arm or your leg

…I felt so bad I didn’t know what to do.

he said, more more precious than diamonds, more treasured than gold
more potent than whiskey, more gathered than wine
it’ll just give you discomfort, and no peace of mind

and when you come out the nod you’ll always be aware,
you shot every drop into your heart
and its full of fear

now you must rush out and hit another sting
praise me, as I oh heroin the king

but he said be quick my friend, get off your knees!
oh yeah!!! get off your knees.
you’re up tight and accept no pleas”

Pulp – The Fear

This Is Hardcore -albumin avausraita, The Fear, voisi olla kuvaus huumeiden käytön aiheuttamista peloista ja paniikeista. Monkey on my back viittaisi hieman siihen suuntaan.

”This is our ”Music from A Bachelors Den”
The sound of loneliness turned up to ten.
A horror soundtrack from a stagnant water-bed
And it sounds just like this.
This is the sound of someone losing the plot
Making out that they’re okay when they’re not.
You’re gonna like it,
But not a lot
And the chorus goes like this:

Oh baby,
Here comes the fear again.
The end is near again.
A monkey’s built a house on your back.
You can’t get anyone to come in the sack
And here comes another panic attack
Oh here we go again.

So now you know the words to our song,
Pretty soon you’ll all be singing along.
When you’re sad, when you’re lonely
And it all turns out wrong.
When you’ve got the fear.

And hen you’re no longer searching
For beauty or love
Just some kind of life
With the edges taken off.
When you can’t even define what it is that you’re frightened of
This song will be here.

Oh baby,
Here comes the fear gain.
The end is near again.
If you ever get that chimp off your back.
If you ever find the thing that you lack
But you know you’re only having a laugh
And here we go again.
Until the end.”

Seremonia – Rock’n’Rollin maailma

Seremonian ensialbumin ykkössingle on kyllä varsin tarttuva ralli Rock-maailmasta ja sen paheista :-D

”Sabatti, purppura ja zeppeliini
pilvi, pillerit ja halpa viini
illasta toiseen kadulla notkut
duunistakin tuli jo potkut

roskiin lentää rippiristi
kun kuvioon tulee okkultismi
tuttu maailma taakse jää
kun mielenterveyden menettää

Rock’n’rollin maailma
päihteet rikokset kuolema
kirkkomaa tai mielisairaala
viimeisenä osoitteena”

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey

Tämän Psychocandy levyn avausraidan sanat eivät ole mitenkään yksiselitteiset, mutta sen on tulkittu kertovan kokaiinista.

”Listen to the girl
As she takes on half the world
Moving up and so alive
In her honey dripping beehive
Beehive
It’s good, so good, it’s so good
So good

Walking back to you
Is the hardest thing that
I can do
That I can do for you
For you

I’ll be your plastic toy
I’ll be your plastic toy
For you

Eating up the scum
Is the hardest thing for
Me to do

Just like honey”

Slade – Gypsy Roadhog

Nenän puuterointia Sladen malliin. Biisi oli vuoden 1977 levyn ”Whatever happened to Slade” ykkössingle ja joutui aiheensa vuoksi BBC:n boikotoimaksi. Biisi kertoo kokaiinidiileristä, joka pakenee ympäri jenkkilää.

”Powdered my nose in Alabama
Out on a limb
Powdered my nose in Indiana
Ain’t that a sin
I had to get my butt out quick
It always works – the old, old trick
I got away just in the nick of time, that’s why
I powdered my nose in Oklahoma
Over the top
I wasted away in New Orleans
I couldn’t stop
Down in the alley – happy dust
Me and Romona we was gettin’ bust
I got away just in the nick of time, that’s why
I got the nickname the Gypsy Roadhog
On the California trail
I gotta keep my wheels movin’ on
I gotta keep me outa jail
Powdered my nose in San Francisco
Down on the bay
It went to my head down in New York City
I was blasted away
And two ugly scuts bust in the room
They took away my little silver spoon
I got away just in the nick of time, that’s why

I’m comin’ through, through, through
I’m looking for you”

Ace Frehley – Snow Blind

”It’s so hard to feel right baby
When I’m travelin’ around and you’re far behind
Guy, I wish I could see my lady
Girl, I hope you don’t mind ’cause

I’m snowblind, I can’t see a thing
I’m snowblind, I don’t wanna sing
I’m snowblind need a familiar face
I’m snowblind think I’m lost in space

Lookin’ out my window, sometimes I wonder
Am I ever gonna get to where I’m gonna go home?
Maybe tomorrow, maybe next summer
Girl, I just don’t know ’cause

I’m snowblind, I can’t see a thing
I’m snowblind, I don’t wanna sing
I’m snowblind need a familiar face
I’m snowblind think I’m lost in space

Movin’ around I get in trouble
When I’m feelin’ so low and out of my mind
Babe, I don’t wanna burst your bubble
Girl, you know the reason why ’cause

I’m snowblind, I can’t see a thing
I’m snowblind, I don’t wanna sing
I’m snowblind need a familiar face
I’m snowblind think I’m lost in space”

Mad Season – Wake Up

Mad Season oli grungen superkokoonpano, joka syntyi Pearl Jamin Mike McCready hakeutui katkolle ja kohtasi siellä basisti John Baker Saundersin. Hoidosta päästyään he perustivat sivuprojektin Screaming Treesin rumpalin. Barrett Martinin kanssa. McCready toi uuteen projektiin laulajaksi Alice in Chainsin Layne Staleyn sillä sivuajatuksella, että kuivilla olevat muusikot voisivat jeesiä pahasti heroiinikoukussa ollutta laulajaa. Ei ole yllätys, että Mad Seasonin ainokaiseksi jääneellä albumilla käsitellään muun muassa addiktiota. Waku Up -biisi kuvaa Staleyn tilannetta…

”Wake up young man, it’s time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go
For 10 long years, for 10 long years
The leaves to rake up

Slow suicide’s no way to go, oh
Blue, clouded grey
You’re not a crack up
Dizzy and weakened by the haze

Moving onward
So an infection not a phase
Yeah, oh
The cracks and lines from where you gave up

They make an easy man to read, oh
For all the times you let them bleed you
For little peace from god you plead, and beg
For little peace from god you plead

Ah, yeah, ah, yeah, ah, yeah
Wake up young man, wake up, wake up
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up
Oh, yeah

Wake up young man, it’s time to wake up
Your love affair has got to go
For 10 long years, yeah
For 10 long years, the leaves to rake up

Slow suicide’s no way to go, oh
Slow suicide’s no way to go
Wake up, wake up, wake up”
